Advice When Choosing a Rug

Colours and Patterns

Light rugs will add an element of space in a room and can help to open up a small area.
Darker and heavily patterned rugs will give a cosier look to a room.

When picking a patterned rug it is best to try and match some of the colours in the rug to your existing décor or have some colour matched accessories in mind that you can add to your room to complement the overall area. It is not necessary to match all of the colours in the rug, but by simply matching one colour in the rug with the existing décor you will have a cohesive and attractive overall result.

When choosing a patterned rug, take into account the traditional/modern elements of your existing décor. Look at the colours and patterns you have at present and try to complement these wherever possible. If you room has heavily patterned curtains or walls, it usually looks better to have a plain rug that does not compete with this pattern. However, if you have a feature wall with heavily patterned wallpaper, this can work very well with a patterned rug with complementary colours.

Sizes and Shapes

The most popular rug shape is rectangular due to the shape of the majority of rooms within standard houses. However, you can also get circular rugs, square rugs, half-moon [semi-circle] rugs, and some bespoke shaped rugs.

Rugs usually come in fairly standard sizes, and the below figures although not completely accurate will give you a rough idea.

  • 60cm x 120cm – usually called 2ft x 4ft
  • 90cm x 150cm – usually called 3ft x 5ft
  • 120cm x 180cm – usually called 4ft x 6ft
  • 150cm x 230cm – usually called 5ft x 7ft
  • 65cm x 225cm – runners come in a variety of sizes

We can also offer some rugs in much larger sizes, and some in bespoke sizes and colours. The bespoke sizes and colours take longer to produce but are available if you have exacting requirements.

Before you buy a rug, check the area that it is to go in by laying out some newspaper. Make sure the rug is the correct size for your requirements and is not obstructing any doorways.

Textures

  • Shaggy
Shaggy style rugs come in many forms, from very cheap styles to very expensive and luxurious styles. The cheap products are for short-term use and should not be expected to last more than a few years, while you can expect the more expensive shaggy rugs to keep their looks and texture for a long time.
  • Twist pile –
Aa standard style of rug that is all the same height and texture. It can be in many different colours and the thickness of the pile can vary.
  • Carved and hand-carved –
Tthis type of rug is made by machine or hand carving patterns in to the rug, or around area of colour in the rug. The carved effect adds definition and texture and give a stylish overall effect.

Materials – Wools, Naturals , Man-made fibres

The main distinction between a wool or man-made fibre rug is the amount of time that it will last and retain its looks for, and the associated cost. Man-made fibre rugs can be produced in very vibrant colours and with a good thick pile, but after a few years the colours will fade slightly and the rug will look slightly worn. Hence, they are quite suitable for changing fashions and tastes and can be altered after a few years to reflect this at a moderate cost. Wool rugs require a larger initial outlay and are usually produced in more neutral and natural shades or with complex patterns and traditional designs [such as Indian, Persian, and Chinese styles]. A good quality wool rug will last for a long time, and retain its colours and looks over a much longer period.

One factor to consider with a wool rug is that it will naturally shed for a period of time due to being a natural fibre source. Some wool rugs will stop shedding after a few months, however, it could be a couple of months or longer before some stop shedding. Over time the shedding will slow down if vacuumed regularly, and you don’t have to worry about the rug thinning as the shed wool is excess material from the manufacture process. If shedding poses a problem, it would be best to consider a man-made fibre rug, as these will not shed anywhere near as much material.

Wool rugs have a level of natural resistance to water, fire and stains [subject to concentration and early treatment]. They are also resistant to dust mites, which can help with allergy sufferers.

Good quality modern man-made fibre rugs will be almost indistinguishable in terms of quality and feel to wool rugs, but wool rugs will last for a longer period of time, especially in heavy traffic areas.

The price range for man-made fibre rugs can vary greatly, and as with carpets, you only get what you pay for.

A further material used for rugs comes under the ‘Naturals’ label and can include sisal, sea grass, jute, mountain grass and coir. This type of material provides a hard wearing and attractive rug. They are very popular for kitchens and conservatories and add a great natural element to any room.

Cleaning and maintenance

A routine of regular vacuuming should be followed, as with standard floor coverings such as carpet. This will prevent the build up dirt on the surface, and dirt within the pile of the rug. A suction style vacuum will effectively remove loose dirt, and a brush can be used to lift the pile of the rug.

When dealing with minor spills, the sooner you act the better. Blott up excess liquid with a dabbing motions using paper towels or a clean white cloth. Be vigilant not to rub the area, as this pushes the stain into the pile and can spread the affected area. Once all of the excess fluid or material is removed, work from the outside edges of the stain, applying a proprietry carpet cleaner with a clean cloth. Avoid overly wetting the area with the cleaning solution. Once clean, blott up the excess moisture and allow to dry. If the stain persists, repeat the process a few times. If the stain has still not been removed, seek assistance from a professional cleaning company.

Under no circumstance should wet shampoo, wet cleaning or steaming cleaning be used on any of the natural floor coverings such as the grasses and sisals.

Some of the higher end rugs can be requested with an inbuilt stain inhibitor that will offer some initial protection from minor spills. Enquire with your seller about the availability of this service. Another option could be to have the rug scotch guarded by a professional.

Rug Grips

Rug grips are an effective solution for preventing your rug from slipping and sliding around on a floor, and are particularly useful for smaller rugs on wooden and laminate floors. Rug grips come in various sizes and can be cut down to size where necessary.
