Laminate Flooring Guide

Laminate flooring is a very hard-wearing and durable product that can provide many years use at a minimal cost. As with any of the products that we supply and install, you get what you pay for, and can tailor the quality of the product you choose to your individual tastes and usage requirements. Below is a guide to some of the key point and issues to look out for with laminate flooring.

Wood, tile, stone, abstract effect

Laminate flooring can be found in literally thousands of designs and decors. Among the manufacturers that we deal with, we have standard oak effect laminate flooring, walnut laminate floorings, exotic woods, tile and stone laminate flooring from around the world, high gloss laminate tiles, funky green and red patterns, ornate tile effects.

Texture

What texture effect do you want your floor to be. This can be based on the look you want to achieve or your preference with woods, or simply to be in keeping with the existing décor. Some of the options are: smooth and sleek, rustic and hand scraped, battered and aged, oiled, high gloss, authentic embossed, antique stone, wood grain, antique stone.

AC Rating and product thickness

All good laminate manufacturers adhere to an industry classification called the AC Rating. This ranges from AC1 which would classify the laminate as suitable for light use in a home setting, such as a bedroom, to AC5, which is suitable for heavy use in a business or commercial setting such as offices or a busy shops.  The AC rating system is useful when deciding what grade of flooring to buy for your individual needs. The thickness of the laminate floor can be an indication of the rating, however, don’t be fooled into thinking that a product is strong just because of the thickness. We have 7mm thick laminate floors with a higher AC rating than 15mm thick laminate floors available on the market. Happy Feet Floors have a range of laminates with different AC ratings, and you can rest assured we will advise the most suitable for your situation.

Guarantee

This is the length of time that the manufacturer of the laminate flooring is able to say that the flooring surface and locking structure will last for under the conditions that the AC rating stated. For example, if you buy a floor with AC1 rating for your light-use bedroom, and the manufacturer offers a 10 year warranty. You can expect that the floor structure and surface will not degrade within this time if maintained and protected properly. The same length of guarantee may apply for a laminate floor with an AC5 rating in a busy shop premises. Happy Feet Floors have a large range of laminates available with varying length guarantee. This ensures that you find the right laminate for your needs, and don’t overpay.

Click-system

There are a number of patented systems for the joining of laminate floor panels. One of the most well-known is the Unilin click system, which is licensed and used by a number of manufacturers. Modern click systems make laminate floors very simple and quick to install with a little DIY knowledge. Alternately, Happy Feet Floors have a team of fitters available to do the job for you quickly and efficiently.

Stain and Imprint resistance

Some laminate floors come with the added benefit of being resistant to a large number of stains and very difficult to damage or imprint. Happy Feet Floors always recommend the use of felt pads and castor cups on furniture to help protect our laminate flooring.

Moisture protection

It is useful to find out the level of moisture protection a particular laminate floor has. This can relate to the quality of the High Density Fibreboard used to construct the laminate, and the seal between the laminate joints. Many of the products from Happy Feet Floors come with an Aqua Stop moisture protection system to protect your floor from minor spills. The surface of all laminate floor panels is protected against moisture as it is a sealed plasticised surface, it is the joints and HDF board that is important.

Pack size

Almost all companies supplying laminate flooring will supply it per pack. Pack sizes can vary from less than 1sqm up to sometimes 3sqm. When you are looking at the amount of laminate floor you require, you should bear in mind the 5-10% wastage required [depending on the rooms to be done] and work out the amount of packs you need based on this.
